So, we've managed to survive the first week of school in Edina, and you've survived your first week of college classes - congratulations to both of us!
I spotted one of the official signs of fall last night: the very first regular season pro football game on television, NY Giants vs. Washington Redskins. We celebrated at home by eating leftover dumplings and fried rice at the coffee table, augmented with a frozen pizza (your dad still feels sorry for the Schwan's guy, and insists on ordering something every time he knocks at the door!). Mind you, we didn't actually pay attention to much of the game, switching it over to the Chef Ramsey restaurant make-over show after about 30 minutes....
Lydia is trying to hang on to the last vestiges of summer by planning more outings with friends. This afternoon she's staying after school with Emily and Clara at the Cyber Cafe, then going home with Emily to her mom's house on Lake Harriet. The girls are planning on going to the Edina football game tonight, and then having a sleepover at Emily's. But then Lydia has to stay home for the weekend, that's the deal.
She managed her first homework assignment in geometry without needing my help, which was a confidence booster. Her science teacher is new this year, and Lydia loves her. Another plus!
Work continues to be not the most engaging of occupations, but steady, pleasant and it pays. In today's economic times, that's about the best I can hope for.
Weekend plans probably include starting to put the garden to bed for the fall by cutting down the first of the perennials and pulling out some annuals. I need to call Kevin Cody to schedule a time to finish off the dining room and put in the flooring. Dad is agitating for me to pick out a paint color for the bathroom to finish that off as well, so I foresee a Hirschfield's trip in my near future....all in all, a slow weekend.
It's really nice hearing from you at bedtime, very sweet that you think of us. Don't worry about feeling lonely at times; it's perfectly normal. You've left one familiar routine, but haven't quite managed to settle into a new one. I think it's great that you've found the start of a new circle of friends, and that you're taking advantage of all those great drop in classes - I wish I could find something like that around here!
Let us know when the boxes with your skates arrives, I know dad is concerned about it getting there intact.
Big hugs,
Mom
